ALAND (ÅLAND) PHILATELY
Varieties
Varieties of stamps and other postal items do exist for every postal administration worldwide. Aland is no exception. Varieties are in the overwhelming number of cases unintented since they are the result of a technical or human error. There are postal administrations and or in modern times agencies though which may "produce" varieties on purpose, to sell into the philatelic market purely for profit reasons.
In case of Aland, varieties which have become known have always been unintended and will certainly continue to do so, should new ones pop up.
But what is a variety in the philatelic context ? Varieties can stem from
-
Variants in paper on which stamps were printed (thickness, additives, texture)
-
Missing or wrong colors applied during the print
-
Small or large printing plate damages manifesting themselves on stamps
-
Printing irregularities (i.e. dust particles)
-
Mis-Perforations
-
Other technical reasons
