Aland Facts

Aland (Swedish: Åland, Finnish: Ahvenanmaa) is an autonomous area of Finland of about 6500 islands and skerries situated at the entrance of the Gulf of Both in the Baltic Sea.
The land area is 1.580 square kilometers which is roughly the size of the city of Sao Paulo in Brazil but with a mere population of 30.500 (2023) equaling small cities like Dijon (France), Thessaloniki (Greece), Aalen (Germany), Vicksburg (Mississippi, USA).
Aland has autonomous status since 1920, main language is Swedish, the capital is called Mariehamn. Of the 6500 islands and skerries between 60-80 are inhabited.
Administratively Aland is divided into municipalities. Those are from west to east: Eckerö (separate islands), Hammarland (main islands), Geta (main islands), Finström (main islands), Jomala (main islands), Mariehamn (main islands), Saltvik (main islands), Sund (main islands), Lemland (main islands), Lumparland (separate islands), Vårdö (separate islands), Föglö (separate islands), Sottunga (separate islands), Kumlinge (separate islands), Kökar (separate islands), Brandö (separate islands).
