Gutter Pairs

5_with_number.jpg

Since Aland issues its own stamps from 1984 onwards, the stamp sheets have been enriched with gutter pairs. Only the very first stamps with the Fishing boats were an exception without gutter pairs.

The first stamp issues had each empty gutter pairs plus gutter pairs with numbering. This layout was followed by stamp issues again with numbered gutter pairs but instead of empty gutter pairs these had a diagonal line.

Further layouts introduced were gutter pairs with numbering and diagonal line where the last four number digits indicate the print year. In addition commemorating the 350 year jubilee emblem of the existence of the Finnish Post two designs with and without the year number were added.

As of 1993 the gutter-pairs had the emblem of the Åland Post. In 2004 individualised gutter pairs were introduced which highlighted the topic of the stamp. They would often fit nicely into the sheet from a coloring and object-showing prospective giving a much more unified impression of the sheet.
