Aland Revenue Stamps

Aland1_1981_Schiffspost_Maracaibo.jpg

With the granted autonomy of Aland when Finland was declared independent in 1917, Aland started to issue its own revenue stamps in 1923. These where used for confirmation of payment of mandatory taxes with the stamps attached to respective documents. This practice lasted until 2002. Over the period of usage several designs have been issued ranging from 1923 to 1962, 1963 to 1977 and 1978 to 2002.

Finland's  revenue stamps could also be used in Aland.

Ship Mail from Maracaibo to Mareihamn in 1981

Mail item from Maracaibo (Venezuela) to Mariehamn, dated October 23, 1981. The envelope bears a “Seaman's Mail” imprint. Franked with 0.80 FIM. The printed matter was apparently transported on the ship “M.T. Hugo” (M.T. = Motor Tanker) of the Alfa Steamship Company Ltd., owned by the Lundqvist shipping company.

Apparently, the Venezuelan postal service in Maracaibo was willing to cancel the Finnish stamps. 0.80 FIM was not the correct postage at that time. For a domestic printed matter item, 1.00 FIM would have been required (for transport by the Finnish postal service from the ship’s port of call in Finland or Åland to the destination address. A special rate may have applied).
